Background and Objectives
Blood Transfusion is vital in saving lives. Effective management of blood in the clinical settings is an essential medical function and plays a critical role in ensuring appropriate provision of blood. The purpose of this study is to explain the management analysis of blood supply, processing, and distribution at the Blood Transfusion Center of Kerman in order to propose effective corrective solutions.
Materials and Methods
This qualitative study employed purposive and snowball method sampling. Semi-Structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted with experts with adequate competence in blood supply management, processing, and distribution as well as with qualified researchers. The interviews at the tenth interview attempt reached enough. The contents of interviews were transcribed and systematically coded. The codes were reviewed and rifined by the research group. Finally, the tables were constructed based on the derived concepts. The most significant challenges were identified based on the highest frequency of mention among interviewees.
Results
Qualitative data analysis showed that important challenges in blood supply include cultural factors, beliefs, new social phenomena, economical issues and factors related to blood services and clinical setting. In the domain of blood processing, the primary challenges were out dated or non-functional equipment and insufficient staff. Regarding of blood distribution, key challenges included inadequate awareness among clinical personnel inadequate number of personnel, and insufficient equipment.
Conclusions
It seems necessary for Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization to promote supportive messures at information and policy levels across three domains of blood supply, processing and distribution. This will require long-term policymaking and strategic setting and recruitment of competent human resources within hospitals.
