Abstract Background and Objectives HIV spreads rapidly both within and across borders. The majority of new cases emerges among young adults who are also main victims. Iran is a young country and it is necessary to determine knowledge and attitude of students as a symbol of young population to understand their ability in campaign with AIDS and plan appropriate educational programs. Materials and Methods A cross sectional study was conducted amongst 951 students of Zahedan Islamic Azad University from 2007 to 2008. The information was acquired by a four-part questionnaire. The obtained data were finally analyzed with Chi-square and t-test by using SPSS16. Results Our results showed that the knowledge level of 50.2% of university students about HIV/AIDS was evaluated as good, 44% intermediate, and 5.8% poor. Out of the respondents, 17.1% had positive attitude and 25.9% negative attitude toward HIV/AIDS, and 56.9% neither negative nor positive. Out of the students, 12.1% had misconceptions about transmission of HIV/AIDS. Mosquito bites (31.9%), public swimming pools (11%), public toilets (3.5%), sneezing and coughing (11.9%), kissing (9.2%), and shaking hands (3.4%) were incorrectly identified as routes of transmission. Conclusions Although the knowledge level of students seemed to be moderately high, misconception about the routes of transmission was common. The misconceptions and unfavorable attitudes should be then corrected. Key words: AIDS, Students, Knowledge, Attitude
